Currently the UU uses the so-called RefWorks Classic interface. As of July 17 it is possible to use the new 2.0 interface using the switch in the top-right corner of the screen. The new interface is a major overhaul and takes some getting used to, but the functionality remains the same. A few screens (Write-n-Cite and
RefGrab-It) will get their new skin only this fall.
On October 29th, 2011 RefWorks 2.0 will become the default interface. Through the end of the year it will remain possible to switch back to RefWorks Classic, but from 2012 RefWorks 2.0 will be the only interface available.
RefWorks has some material available to make for a smooth switch:
RefWorks 2.0 Quick Start Guide
Demo of the new interface
Tutorials (‘fundamentals and ‘advaced features’)
Free live webinars (recorded webinars also available)
The demo especially is helpful as it gives a quick impression of the most important changes.

Removing references from your document
We often get this question: when using RefWorks, how do I remove references from the Word-document? Simply by editing the document using delete or backspace?
No, that is not the preferred method and may cause problems. To remove a reference from a document take these steps:
- open the document and open RefWorks Write-n-Cite III
- in WNCIII select display unformatted citations under tools
- in the document, place the cursor in the references you wish to remove; this will now be marked grey
- in WNCIII click edit citation top right
- next to the citation, click remove
- in the document, remove the remaining curly brackets {{}} by hand

Refworks slowness
RefWorks slowness (24-9-2010, 12:00 UTC)
RefWorks has become menacingly slow over the last few weeks. This has been reported to RefWorks. It is a worldwide problem. The main problem (servers that are for unclear reasons declining requests) has been solved. One should be able to access one's account. However we gather that the site is still unworkably slow and take that very seriously. We have contacted RefWorks again urging them to take immediate action to improve the situation.
Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and time lost.

Google Scholar: Import to Refworks moved

Judith Gulpers: 'Hello, while giving a RefWorks-workshop this afternoon I saw that in Google Scholar the option to select Import to RefWorks has moved. You have to select Scholar Preferences in the right upper corner'.

RefWorks Support: Error message using Create Bibliotgraphy (WNCIII)
Transcript of Q&A with RefWorks support:
Question:
One of our customers encountered a problem while attempting to use the 'Create Bibliography' function in RefWorks, using Word2007 (document extension: .docx) and Write-n-Cite III. She received the following error report:
Errors were encountered while processing your document:
- The following error occurred attempting to read your document: 'this.oRange.Text.substr(...).match(...).0' is null or not an object
In investigating this problem, we opened the .docx in Word2003 (Word2007 not being available in the library). Attempting to use 'Create Bibliography (with Write-n-Cite III) resulted in the same error report.
Subsequently, we tried saving the document as a .doc file, saving the document as a .doc file under a different name and copying the content of the original document into a new .doc file. These attempts resulted in the following error message when attempting to use 'Create Bibliography' (Word2003, Write-n-CiteIII):
The following Errors were found while processing your document
- The following error occurred attempting to read your document: 'length' is null or not an object.
Could you advise us on the possible cause of this problem and provide a solution?
Answer:
That error indicates that part of the document was written with Write N Cite v.2 and part was written with Write N Cite III.
NB. An alternative explanation/solution was found by Googling the error message:
From: James F Brett
I dealt with the same issue yesterday. The problem was (or I think was) that the student had inserted citations into her doc using WnC but had nor used edit citation function to remove an in-text citation. She simply deleted the citations in Word and kept on going with the document. We backed up to her original document that had no inserted citations, then inserted a couple of citations and were able to successfully format her document.
