We often get this question: when using RefWorks, how do I remove references from the Word-document? Simply by editing the document using delete or backspace?
No, that is not the preferred method and may cause problems. To remove a reference from a document take these steps:
- open the document and open RefWorks Write-n-Cite III
- in WNCIII select display unformatted citations under tools
- in the document, place the cursor in the references you wish to remove; this will now be marked grey
- in WNCIII click edit citation top right
- next to the citation, click remove
- in the document, remove the remaining curly brackets {{}} by hand

This simple example already demonstrates that introducing RefWorks was a very bad decision. Compared with professional programs such as EndNote, RefWorks is complicated, contra-intuitive, often extremely slow, and last but not least, output styles produce reference lists which have no resemblance with the instructions of a journal (e.g. Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews).
